jqGrid emptyrecords

Hello,
I cant seem to get this parameter to work. In the docs it says to make
sure that viewrecords is set to true which I have done. I have
searched Google and this group and found nothing.

This is the JSON that is returned from my service:

{"total":0,"page":"1","records":0,"rows":[]}

This is my base definition:

jQuery.extend(jQuery.jgrid.defaults,{
emptyrecords: "No records retrieved",
viewrecords: true
}
);

Here is one of my grid definitions:
